Alternative Teak Decking

Why use Alternatives to Teak for decking?

Teak prices are quite high, leading some clients to explore more keenly-priced alternatives. Fortunately, we provide quality tropical hardwoods and synthetic alternatives to Teak. Hardwood alternatives include Ipe (Brazilian Walnut), Cumaru (Brazilian Teak), Tigerwood, Garapa (Brazilian Ash) and Mahogany. We also make elegant decking from African hardwoods, such as Iroko and Azobe (see below).   Please contact us for the latest prices of alternatives to Teak.

What Is Iroko?

Iroko is an extremely durable hardwood timber, native to West and Central Africa. The trees are very tall, up to 40 metres, and the timber is especially well-suited to outdoor use. Robust and hardy, Iroko is often compared to Teak and is a favourite with boat owners and home owners alike.

Why use Iroko for decking?

Appearance - Iroko starts out golden yellow, but over time deepens into a stunning copper brown. Rich, dark streaks run through it, making Iroko a popular choice for a range of uses.

Natural resistance – Iroko has superb natural resistance to insects, fungi and rot, making it perfect for outdoor use, especially boat decking. It can also stand up to changes in temperature and humidity, making it suitable for marine use.

Shock-absorbtion – Iroko has exceptional shock-absorbing properties.

Low maintenance -  Iroko is hardy and can stand a lot of wear and tear.

What is Azobe?

Azobe, also known as Ekki, is a hardwood native to the forests of West and Central Africa. It is well-known for its density and strength, making it a robust option for outdoor decking projects such as jetties and pontoons.

Why use Azobe for decking?

Appearance – Azobe has a striking appearance, usually with a deep, dark red colour or a rich brown, with purple streaks in the timber.

Strength – Azobe is very strong and a popular choice for decking with heavy footfall, such as jetties and pontoons. It can even withstand light vehicular traffic.

Longevity – Azobe is suitable for marine applications given its durability.
